Smudging is a sacred ritual that has been used by Indigenous cultures for centuries, particularly among Native American, First Nations, and other Indigenous groups around the world. It involves burning herbs such as sage, cedar, lavender, sweetgrass, or palo santo, with the smoke believed to cleanse and purify both your physical spaces indoors our outdoors, and your spiritual spaces in and around your physical body.
The ritual of smudging is deeply intertwined with ancient traditions, and its impact goes beyond merely clearing physical spaces. Smudging touches the spiritual, emotional, and energetic dimensions of life, providing individuals with a tool for cleansing, protection, and personal transformation.
Following we have a number of ways you can use smudging physical or spiritually, but overall is readily used for clearing stagnate and negative energy…
Smudging is mostly performed to clear negative energy from home / office / environment spaces, objects (like books, jewellery, tarot cards, etc…) or individuals and even animals. This cleansing process can purify environments where death, conflict, sadness, or stress has occurred. In spiritual terms, negative energy can be thought of as stagnant or dense heavy energy that blocks the free flow of spiritual (prana) or life force energy. By burning sacred herbs, the smoke is believed to transform and dissipate these negative vibrations, allowing a more harmonious, high-vibrational atmosphere to emerge, and as a bonus the breathing of beautiful uplifting herbal scents.
Personal Cleansing: Individuals can smudge themselves to release negative emotions, such as anger, fear, sorrow, and even confusion. The smoke is symbolically passed over the body, representing a purification of one's aura or energy field. To further empower the ritual of smudging an intention gives it another level.
Environmental Cleansing: Smudging is also done to cleanse spaces (homes, sacred areas) of lingering energies from previous occupants, events, or activities. It is believed that negative energies can accumulate in environments like non-air-flowing constructions, and smudging helps to neutralise and release them.
Restoring Spiritual Harmony: Smudging is believed to restore balance to an individual's spiritual state. When we go through periods of stress, trauma, or illness, our free-flowing energetic system can become imbalanced. Smudging helps to reset this balance by re-aligning an individual’s energy with positive forces.
Smudging can also open the door for personal spiritual evolution. As the smudging ritual clears your energetic blockages, it enables individuals to connect more fully with their higher self, their intuition, and spiritual guides. This can lead to profound realisations and heightened awareness allowing for a more connected understanding in how you walk your path.
Connecting to Ancestors and Spirit Guides: Smudging is also a way to invoke and honour spiritual ancestors, deities, and spirit guides. Many Indigenous cultures from around the world see it as a means to communicate with those who have passed on or with spiritual beings that offer guidance and protection.
Inviting Divine Assistance: During ceremonies or sacred moments, smudging can be used to invite benevolent spirits or ancestors to provide guidance, wisdom, or healing. The rising smoke is often seen as a vehicle for prayers or requests to be carried to the heavens or spirit realm.
Clearing Limiting Beliefs: Smudging helps clear out self-doubt, limiting beliefs, or fear-based patterns that can block manifestation efforts. The act of consciously releasing these mental blocks as you smudge yourself helps align the individual with higher possibilities.
Setting Intentions and Manifestation: Smudging helps in the process of manifestation by clearing out negative influences that may hinder the fulfilment of desires. When performed with focused your intent, it allows individuals to align with their goals, whether they be spiritual, emotional, or material.
The act of smudging during this process amplifies the intention, creating a vibrational match between the desire and its realisation.
How to go about the art of smudging: These steps apply whether you’re cleansing yourself, your home or environment, an object, and even jewellery. Smudge any of these as often as you’d like…
- Light the end of a smudge stick bundle with a match. Blow out quickly if it catches on fire.
- The tips of the smudge stick leaves should smoulder slowly, releasing medium to thick smoke. Direct this smoke around your body and/or space with one hand, while holding the bundle in the other.
- Importantly crack a window or door open to allow smoke and energy to escape.
- Allow the incense (smoke) to linger on the areas of your body or surroundings you’d like to focus on. Using a fan or feather can also help direct the smoke, though this is optional.
- Allow the ash to collect in a ceramic bowl, on a tile or a shell.
Once last point: You can make your own smudge stick, but if not make sure your purchased smudge stick has been sustainably harvested, ethically sourced, and is fully traceable to source.
The practice of smudging has profound spiritual, physical and space clearing benefits, helping to balance, cleanse, and align both body, mind and the environment you inhabit. By inviting positive energy and releasing negativity, smudging serves as a powerful tool for personal and environmental purification. Whether used in spiritual practice, for general well-being or clearing space, it enhances mindfulness, peace, and holistic health.
